How to Erect Fence Posts & Install Fence Panels
Installing fence panels is a great way to create a boundary around your garden, giving you privacy and security. Fence panels are not only practical but also enhance your gardens appearance. Here’s a step-by-step guide for this process:
Tools and Materials Needed:
- Fence panels
- Gravel boards
- Fence posts
- Post mix (if setting posts in concrete)
- Gravel (for drainage)
- Level
- Tape measure
- Post hole digger, auger or a narrow spade
- String line (for alignment)
Planning and Measurement:
- Determine where you want to install the fence and measure the total length.
- Mark the positions for the posts, these are typically 6 feet apart which is the standard width of a fence panel
Marking Post Locations:
- Use stakes or paint to mark the spot for each post along a string line for straight alignment.
Digging Post Holes:
- Dig holes for each post, about one-third the height of the post and wider at the bottom. Aim for a depth of at least 2 feet for stability.
Setting the Posts:
- Place gravel in the bottom of each hole for drainage. Ensure proper drainage around the base of the fence post to prevent rot.
- Insert the fence posts into the holes, checking for vertical alignment with a level.
- Fill the holes with concrete mix or backfill with soil, tamping it down firmly.
- Allow the concrete to cure (typically 24-48 hours).
Installing Gravel Boards:
- Gravel boards are placed at the bottom of the fence panels to protect them from moisture and damage.
- Cut the gravel boards to the required lengths if necessary.
- Position the gravel boards at the bottom of the posts, ensuring they are level and aligned with the panels.
Attaching Fence Panels:
- Starting at one end, lift the fence panel into place above the gravel board.
- Use a level to ensure each panel is straight.
- Secure the panels to the posts with screws or nails .
