What's the difference between C24 & C16 Timber?

Here at Suffolk Woodcraft we only stock C24 timber. There is a reason we only stock this and not the inferior C16 timber. I will explain below.

Strength and Load-Bearing Capacity

  • C24 timber has a higher strength classification, which means it can withstand greater loads without bending or breaking. This makes it ideal for structural applications where strength is critical. C24 can support heavier loads over longer spans compared to C16, making it suitable for beams, joists, and structural frames.

Great for Structural Use

  • C24 is commonly used in construction projects, including floor joists, roof trusses, and load-bearing walls. It meets building regulations for structural integrity. Because of its strength, C24 can be used in more demanding situations, such as commercial buildings and larger residential projects.

Durability and Stability

  • C24 timber is less prone to warping, twisting, or bending under load, providing greater stability in structural applications.C24 timber is typically straighter than C16 timber, which makes it easier to work with and install. This is because C24 timber is typically made from slow-grown softwood species, which have tighter grain and fewer natural defects.

Building Codes and Regulations

  • Many building codes require the use of higher-grade timber like C24 for certain structural applications, ensuring safety and compliance. Timber is graded using various standards, such as BS 4978 in the UK and the National Grading Rule in the US, which outline specific criteria and methods for grading different types of wood.

Cost-Effectiveness

  • Although C24 may have a higher initial cost, its strength and durability can lead to lower maintenance and replacement costs over time, making it a more cost-effective choice in the long run. Furthermore, C16 grade is a more cost-effective option as it permits defects. These can include grain aberrations and wanes that may hinder the strength of the wood, in addition to sap stains and uneven surfaces that have negative aesthetic implications.

While C16 timber may be adequate for lightweight, non-structural applications, C24 offers significant advantages in strength, durability, and versatility. If your project requires structural integrity and the ability to handle heavy loads, C24 is the better choice.

We supply pressure treated C24 framework all the way from 2x2 up to 8x2. They have a whole range of uses. 2x2 is ideal framework for smaller sheds and summerhouses.4x2 is the perfect size for level decking frames and 8x2 is versatile in many roofing applications.
